Overview
An X-ray is a quick imaging test that uses a small amount of radiation to create pictures of the inside of your body, most often your bones, chest, or abdomen.
During the test, a beam of X-ray energy passes through your body. Dense structures such as bone absorb most of the beam and appear white on the image. Softer tissues such as muscle and fat absorb less, so they appear in shades of grey. Air-filled spaces, like the lungs, let almost all of the beam through and appear dark. A radiologist (a doctor who specialises in reading medical images) then studies the picture to look for anything unusual.

- Low-dose radiation exposure — a single X-ray delivers a very small dose of radiation, roughly comparable to the natural background radiation you receive from the environment over a few days. This is not considered harmful for most people having an occasional scan.
- Cumulative radiation — people who need many X-rays over months or years receive a higher total dose. Your doctor keeps track of this and will choose non-radiation alternatives when possible.
- Risk in pregnancy — there is a small theoretical risk to a developing baby, which is why the abdomen is shielded and non-urgent X-rays are postponed when possible.
- Contrast reactions (chest X-rays without contrast carry no such risk) — if a contrast dye (a liquid injected to highlight certain areas) is ever used alongside imaging, allergic reactions are possible, though this is not standard for a plain X-ray.
- No radiation risk from the image itself — once the scan is done, no radiation remains in your body.
Preparation & Procedure

Most importantly, tell them if you are or might be pregnant. For a chest or limb X-ray, you do not need to fast (stop eating or drinking). No specific blood tests or pre-procedure investigations are usually needed for a plain X-ray. If a contrast dye is planned as part of a more complex study, the team may check your kidney function first.
Here is what typically happens during the procedure:
- You will be asked to remove jewellery, metal hair clips, and sometimes clothing in the area being imaged, and given a gown if needed.
- The radiographer (the trained technician who operates the machine) will position you — standing, sitting, or lying down — depending on which part of the body is being scanned.
- A lead apron (a heavy protective shield) may be placed over parts of your body not being imaged, especially the pelvis and reproductive organs.
- You will be asked to stay very still for a second or two while the image is taken. For a chest X-ray, you may be asked to take a deep breath and hold it briefly.
- The radiographer steps briefly behind a screen or into an adjacent room to take the image — this is normal and simply protects staff who work with X-ray equipment all day.
- The whole process usually takes only a few minutes. The number of images taken depends on what the doctor has requested.
- You can return to your normal activities immediately after.
Aftercare
After a plain X-ray there is no recovery period and no restrictions on eating, drinking, or activity. You can drive, go back to work, and carry on with your day as normal straight away. The aftercare for an X-ray is really about understanding the results and what comes next.
- Results timing — a radiologist will analyse the images and send a report to your referring doctor. This usually takes from a few hours to a couple of days, depending on urgency and the hospital's process.
- Follow-up appointment — your referring doctor will discuss the results with you and decide whether further tests, treatment, or specialist referral is needed.
- If contrast dye was used — in the rare cases where a dye was given, you may be advised to drink extra water to help your kidneys clear it. The team will give specific guidance.
- Keep your images — in many facilities, images are stored digitally. Ask for a copy on a disc or via a digital link if you are seeking a second opinion or continuing care elsewhere.
- No special wound care — there is no incision (cut), no wound, and nothing to dress or clean after a standard X-ray.
