Questions patients ask about Japan
Why choose Japan for medical tourism?
Japan combines globally leading cancer technology β including proton and heavy-ion therapy β with extreme attention to detail in patient care. It's the right choice for patients who need advanced specialty treatment, comprehensive diagnostics, or a second opinion from a top oncology center.
What procedures is Japan known for?
Japan excels in oncology (especially particle-beam therapy), robotic-assisted surgery, cardiology, regenerative medicine, and the 'ningen dock' comprehensive health screening. Japanese pioneers also developed many advanced screening protocols now adopted worldwide.
How much can I save on treatment in Japan?
Savings are typically 20-40% versus US prices β smaller than Thailand or Malaysia, but Japan offers access to treatments unavailable elsewhere. Heavy-ion therapy costs $30,000-50,000; a premium ningen dock screening starts around $1,500.
Do Japanese hospitals support English-speaking patients?
Major hospitals like St. Luke's International, Cancer Institute Hospital, and the JCI-accredited centers in Tokyo and Osaka maintain dedicated international patient departments with English-speaking coordinators and interpreters. Outside hospital, English is more limited.
What visa do I need for medical treatment in Japan?
Many nationalities (US, EU, ASEAN) receive visa-free entry for up to 90 days, sufficient for most treatments. For extended care, a Medical Stay Visa (up to 6 months, renewable to 12) is available with hospital documentation. Indonesian passport-holders may apply for an eVisa online.
