Overview
A visual acuity test is an eye examination that measures how sharply and clearly you can see details at a set distance.
During the test, you read letters or symbols on a standardised chart — most commonly the Snellen chart (the familiar rows of letters that get smaller towards the bottom). Each row corresponds to a level of sharpness. Your eye doctor records which row you can read accurately, which tells them how well light is being focused by the cornea (the clear front surface of the eye) and lens onto the retina (the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye). The result is written as a fraction, such as 6/6 or 20/20, meaning you can see at 6 metres what a person with normal vision sees at 6 metres.

Preparation & Procedure
Almost no special preparation is needed for a visual acuity test. There is no fasting, no medication to pause, and no restriction on alcohol or smoking specifically for this test. However, a few practical steps help make the result as accurate as possible.
If you normally wear glasses or contact lenses, bring them to the appointment. The doctor will usually test your vision both with and without correction. If you wear contact lenses, some clinics ask you to remove them a short time before the appointment so the cornea returns to its natural shape — your clinic will advise you on this. Avoid rubbing your eyes heavily just before the test, as this can cause temporary blurring.
No blood tests, scans, or other investigations are needed specifically before a visual acuity test. If the doctor plans a more comprehensive eye examination on the same visit — including a dilated fundus examination (looking at the back of the eye using drops that widen the pupil) — you may be advised to arrange a driver, as the dilation drops can blur your vision for a few hours. Again, this is related to the additional examination, not to the acuity test itself.
The test itself follows a straightforward sequence, though the exact steps may vary slightly between clinics:
- You are seated or stood at a set distance from the chart — commonly 6 metres (or 20 feet), or a shorter distance if a near-vision card is used
- You cover one eye with a paddle or your hand; the other eye is tested first
- You read the letters or symbols aloud, starting from the largest row at the top and moving down to progressively smaller rows
- The examiner notes the smallest row you can read correctly
- The process is then repeated for the other eye
- If needed, the examiner may place a pinhole occluder (a small disc with a tiny hole) in front of your eye; this helps separate optical blur from other causes of poor vision
- Results are recorded immediately and reviewed with you or with the referring doctor
Aftercare
Because a visual acuity test is non-invasive and takes only a few minutes, there is essentially no recovery period. You can usually return to all normal activities immediately after the test. The main exception is if the same visit includes pupil-dilation drops — in that case, your near vision may be blurry and you may be sensitive to bright light for a few hours, so driving is usually not recommended until the effect has worn off.
- No wound care, dressings, or physical restrictions of any kind are needed after the test itself
- If dilation drops were used, wear sunglasses outdoors and avoid driving until your vision has fully returned to normal — your doctor will tell you roughly how long to expect
