He was invited back to in 1991. Dr Tan was formerly the head of the Department of Haematology at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) in 1993. In 1995, he was the chairman of the Chapter of Haematology at the Academy of Medicine, Singapore. In 1997, Dr Tan was appointed as the director of the National Blood Centre, Health Science Authority. He became the medical director of the Haematology and Stem Cell Transplant Centre at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in 2004. In the same year, Dr Tan was appointed the first medical director of the Singapore Cord Blood Bank.
