Dr. Stephen Chang

Dr. Stephen Chang is a General Surgeon practising at Farrer Park Hospital and Farrer Park Medical Centre Singapore, with subspecialty expertise in laparoscopic surgery and the management of gallbladder, liver, pancreatic, digestive, and abdominal conditions. He graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the National University of Singapore in 1994 and obtained his Master of Medicine (Surgery) from NUS in 2000. In 2003, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, United Kingdom, before advancing his training in laparoscopic hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery as well as liver transplantation in Paris, France. Dr. Chang is recognised as a key developer of laparoscopic approaches in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery. He pioneered Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS) in Singapore and was among the first surgeons to publish clinical experiences involving single-incision gallbladder surgery, liver resection, and pancreatic resection. He continues to contribute actively to surgical innovation and was invited to speak at the CCIHPBA China Wuhan Conference in 2024 on the topic “Is Single Port Laparoscopic Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery Still Alive?”. Dr. Chang is the founding President of the Hepatopancreatobiliary Association of Singapore and serves as Adjunct Associate Professor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. His research interests span clinical surgery, basic science, and medical technology development, with research grants exceeding SGD 7 million and multiple patents filed in surgical innovation and treatment technologies.
