Dr. Desmond Ong

Dr. Desmond Ong Hang Shyan is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in sports and orthopaedic conditions, with a strong clinical focus on shoulder, elbow, and wrist disorders. He has extensive experience in advanced arthroscopic and minimally invasive upper limb surgery, particularly for sports-related injuries and degenerative conditions. \n\nPrior to entering private practice, Dr. Ong served as Senior Consultant at Tan Tock Seng Hospital’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, where he contributed to clinical service development and specialist orthopaedic care. \n\nHe graduated from the National University of Singapore in 2000 and obtained his Master of Medicine in Orthopaedic Surgery in 2006. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCS Edinburgh) and is a registered orthopaedic specialist in Singapore. \n\nDr. Ong was awarded the Health Manpower Development Programme (HMDP) scholarship by the Ministry of Health, and the Excellent Service Gold Award in recognition of his clinical excellence. In 2011, he was appointed Visiting Scholar at the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Faculty of Medicine and worked at Prince of Wales Hospital, where he further developed his expertise in advanced arthroscopic surgery of the upper limb, with emphasis on wrist and elbow conditions. \n\nIn addition to clinical practice, Dr. Ong is actively involved in medical education as a clinical tutor with the National University of Singapore. He is also a member of the Singapore Orthopaedic Association and the Singapore Society for Hand Surgery. He has presented widely at regional and international conferences and remains active in community and grassroots initiatives in Ang Mo Kio GRC and the NorthEast CDC.
