Dr. Denis Cheong is a senior general surgery specialist with over 20 years of clinical experience, focusing on colorectal surgery, minimally invasive procedures, and complex gastrointestinal conditions. His clinical practice includes treatment of anal disorders such as hemorrhoids, fistulae and fissures, as well as laparoscopic management of colon and rectal cancers, diverticular disease, gallbladder disorders, hernia repair, and thyroid surgery. \n\nPrior to entering private practice, Dr. Cheong served as Senior Consultant at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where he played a key leadership role in the General Surgery Department. He was instrumental in spearheading the development of colorectal surgery services and served as Head of Colorectal Surgery. He also held the position of Director of the Digestive Disease Center, where he contributed significantly to its development and multidisciplinary care model, including early development of medical and radiation oncology services within the institution. \n\nDr. Cheong graduated from the National University of Singapore Faculty of Medicine in 1983 and completed his specialty training in General Surgery under the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1989. He was awarded the Health Manpower Development Programme (HMDP) Award three times, allowing him to train internationally in colorectal and laparoscopic surgery at leading centres including Cleveland Clinic Florida (USA), St Mark’s Hospital (UK), Karolinska Institute (Sweden), Uppsala University (Sweden), Australasian Endosurgery Centre (Brisbane), and Royal North Shore Hospital (Sydney). \n\nHe has held academic appointments as Senior Clinical Lecturer and examiner at the National University of Singapore Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and has served as Visiting Consultant to multiple major institutions including KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Johns Hopkins Singapore International Medical Centre, and the National Cancer Centre Singapore. \n\nBeyond clinical practice, Dr. Cheong is actively involved in humanitarian medical missions and was part of Singapore’s earthquake relief team deployed to Turkey in 1999.
