Dr. Darren Phua

Dr. Darren Phua is a Singapore specialist board-certified anaesthesiologist with subspecialty fellowship training in chronic and interventional pain medicine. He is currently Medical Director of Novena Pain Management Centre at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, where he focuses on delivering holistic, patient-centered pain care and improving awareness of modern pain management approaches. \n\nDr. Phua graduated with an MBBS from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and subsequently completed his Master of Medicine in Anaesthesiology before attaining specialist accreditation in Singapore. He pursued advanced fellowship training in Pain Medicine at the University of Toronto, Canada—one of the largest and most established anaesthesiology and pain programs globally. He is also a Fellow of Interventional Pain Practice (World Institute of Pain, USA) and a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore. \n\nHis clinical expertise lies in minimally invasive interventional pain procedures, including targeted nerve blocks, radiofrequency ablation, neurolytic procedures, and implant-based pain therapies. These techniques aim to reduce chronic pain, improve function, and minimize reliance on long-term medication or major surgery. \n\nIn addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Phua is actively involved in medical education and research. He has published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at both local and international scientific conferences. He serves as Clinical Senior Lecturer at NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and was previously Core Faculty in the SingHealth Anaesthesiology Residency Programme. He has received multiple teaching awards, including the NUS Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence and the Eastern Healthcare Alliance Best Teacher Award. \n\nHe also serves as Chairman of the Medical Board at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital and continues to contribute as a Visiting Consultant at Changi General Hospital, where he remains involved in clinical teaching and mentorship.
