Kim GuoweiGeneral surgery · Singapore
Dr Kim Guowei is a general surgeon at Gleneagles Hospital, Singapore. He has special interests in upper gastrointestinal surgery (including oesophageal and gastric cancer), metabolic and bariatric surgery, minimally invasive (single incision) surgery, robotic surgery, and diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. He is also proficient in anti-reflux, hernia and gallbladder surgery. Before moving into private practice, Dr Kim was a senior consultant at National University Hospital (NUH), National University Cancer Institute, Singapore and Alexandra Hospital. He graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS). He spent a year at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, South Korea, for his clinical and research fellowship, mastering laparoscopic and robotic surgery for gastric cancer. Dr Kim has a strong interest in innovation in surgery, embracing technology such as artificial intelligence and robotics to improve existing techniques and help patient outcomes. He also is an early adopter of new techniques, being part of the team that performed the first pressurised intraperitoneal aerosolised chemotherapy (PIPAC) procedure in Asia, conducting several first-in-the-world trials on PIPAC, and also being the first in the region to successfully perform mediastinoscopy-assisted transhiatal esophagectomy for patients in whom conventional esophagectomy approaches were not feasible. He has also recently performed the first endoscopic full thickness resection for submucosal tumours of the stomach and the first endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty for bariatric patients at NUH. He was a clinical lecturer for the department of surgery, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, before being appointed an assistant professor. He has been involved in postgraduate education and was the programme director of the National University Health System’s general surgery residency programme. Dr Kim has authored more than 50 papers and has also served as an instructor at local and regional endoscopic and surgical workshops, and has been invited to speak at international conferences on robotic surgery, artificial intelligence in upper gastrointestinal surgery, and on surgical innovation and techniques. He is a reviewer for several journals including the Annals of Surgical Oncology and Obesity Surgery. He currently serves as president-elect, executive committee of the Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society of Singapore, the upper gastrointestinal lead and board member of the Robotic Surgery Society of Singapore, and the national coordinator for The Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons Society. He is also a member of the Singapore Medical Association, and Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia Society. Dr Kim also has a passion for cancer survivorship, helping to organise and facilitate the upper gastrointestinal support group at NUH. He is a recipient of the Alexandra Hospital’s Esprit de Corps Award and the COVID-19 Resilience Medal.
