About Dr. Tan

Dr Patrick Tan is a haematologist practising at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore. He treats diseases related to blood, and subspecialises in bone marrow transplant and transplant immunology, which is the transfer of cells, tissues or organs. Types of transplant immunology include sibling allogeneic transplant, unrelated allogeneic transplant, autologous (using own stem cells) transplant and cord blood transplant. Dr Tan is a pioneer in the field of cord blood and stem cell transplant. He performed the world's first successful case of unrelated blood stem cell transplant and unrelated cord blood transplant for thalassemia major, a rare inherited blood disorder. In 1988, Dr Tan was posted as special Fellow to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre in Seattle, USA, to carry out subspecialty work in bone marrow transplant and transplant immunology. He was invited back to in 1991. Dr Tan was formerly the head of the Department of Haematology at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) in 1993. In 1995, he was the chairman of the Chapter of Haematology at the Academy of Medicine, Singapore. In 1997, Dr Tan was appointed as the director of the National Blood Centre, Health Science Authority. He became the medical director of the Haematology and Stem Cell Transplant Centre at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in 2004. In the same year, Dr Tan was appointed the first medical director of the Singapore Cord Blood Bank. Aside from clinical work, Dr Tan was also appointed as a clinical associate professor in the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at NUS.
